The Torre dello Ziro hike rewards you with one of the most extraordinary 360-degree panoramas on the entire coast from a ruined Saracen watchtower perched on a knife-edge ridge between the valleys of Amalfi and Atrani. Starting from the hamlet of Pontone, a short uphill through pine and holm oak forest brings you to the tower in about 40 minutes. The views are staggering: Amalfi's cathedral and harbor spread below you to the west, while Atrani's miniature piazza and beach fill the frame to the east. Ravello crowns the ridge above. On clear days you can see from Punta Campanella to Capo d'Orso. The tower itself dates to the 15th century and was part of the coastal defense system against Ottoman raids. According to local legend, Duchess Giovanna d'Aragona was imprisoned and murdered here by her brothers for marrying beneath her station โ a story that inspired John Webster's famous play. From the tower, descend via a stairway through terraces to Atrani, one of Italy's smallest and most authentic coastal villages.

Year-round. Best in spring and autumn for clear skies. Summer mornings work well โ the pine forest provides shade for most of the climb. Avoid after rain as the final approach to the tower is exposed rock.
Start: walk from Amalfi center to Pontone (20-30 min uphill on steps). End: Atrani is a 5-minute walk from Amalfi. Both towns served by SITA bus and ferry.
Combine this with the Valle delle Ferriere for a full-day loop: Pontone to Torre dello Ziro, down to Atrani, walk to Amalfi, then up the Valle delle Ferriere back toward Pontone.
