The CAI 300 is the backbone trail of the Lattari Mountains — a high-altitude ridge walk that runs the entire length of the mountain chain above the Amalfi Coast. This section from Agerola to Tramonti traverses some of the wildest and most elevated terrain on the coast, reaching over 1,100 meters with views that stretch from the Bay of Naples to the Gulf of Salerno simultaneously. This is not a casual day hike: it demands solid fitness, proper boots, navigation skills, and early departure. The trail follows the mountain crest through windswept grasslands, limestone karst terrain, and occasional beech forest. You pass ancient shepherds' huts still used during summer grazing, and on clear days the panorama is oceanic — Vesuvius, Capri, Ischia, and the curve of the Italian coastline fading north. The section through the Lattari ridge offers exposure on both sides, with the Amalfi Coast dropping away steeply to the south and the Sarno plain stretching north. Tramonti, your destination, is a rural municipality of scattered hamlets famous for its pizza tradition.
Ridge walking at 1,100 meters with views over both gulfs simultaneously
Wild, uncommercial mountain terrain above the tourist coast
Ancient shepherd huts and summer grazing pastures
Panorama spanning Vesuvius, Capri, Ischia, and the Sorrentine Peninsula
Arrival in Tramonti, birthplace of Neapolitan pizza tradition
Standing on the spine of the mountain with both coasts visible — aerial perspective without a drone
Ancient stone shelter against a vast mountain backdrop — lonely and wild
Gnarled, wind-bent beech trees creating a natural arch — atmospheric in morning mist
Best May-June and September-October. Too hot in July-August at lower sections but ridgeline gets wind. Avoid November-March due to ice, fog, and reduced daylight. Can be dangerously exposed in storms — check weather carefully.
Start: SITA bus from Amalfi to Agerola-Bomerano (40 min). End: Tramonti has limited bus service to Maiori (30 min) and Amalfi. Check return bus times before starting.
This is a proper mountain hike, not a coastal stroll. Bring a map (Cai Monti Lattari 1:25.000), 3 liters of water, lunch, a windproof layer, and a charged phone with offline maps. Start by 7 AM.
