The guide
What Praiano is like.
The name comes from Greek 'Pelagianum' (open sea). Its fishermen were once famous as coral divers who wore a Saracen-style earring in the left lobe. During the Amalfi Republic, it served as the Doges' summer residence. Split into upper Vettica and lower Marina, it offers the most romantic sunsets on the coast — the view stretches all the way to Capri.
Good to know
- Watch the sunset from the main road terrace — it’s the best free show on the coast.
- The Luminarie di San Domenico (July-August): a festival of lights along the village paths.
- Try 'totani e patate alla praianese' — squid and potato stew, the authentic local dish you won’t find on tourist menus elsewhere.
- La Gavitella beach catches the last sun — perfect if you’re a late riser.
