The Fiordo di Crapolla is one of the most dramatic and least-visited spots on the entire coast โ a narrow fjord slicing into the cliffs, accessible only by descending 700 hand-cut stone steps from the village of Torca. The name has nothing to do with the English word it resembles; it derives from the Latin 'Sancti Petri ad Cripta Pallarum,' referring to a medieval chapel of Saint Peter built into a sea cave at the bottom. The descent is steep and relentless, passing through ancient terraces long abandoned to maquis scrub. At the bottom, a tiny stone jetty meets impossibly blue water hemmed in by vertical cliffs rising 100 meters on both sides. The chapel ruins and an old hermit's dwelling cling to the rocks. The swimming is extraordinary โ the fjord creates a natural pool with crystal visibility. The challenge is the return: 700 steps straight up in full sun. This is a place that rewards the committed and punishes the unprepared.

Best April-October. Essential to go early morning in summer โ the climb back up in midday heat is dangerous. Spring is ideal with cooler temperatures. Not recommended in winter when steps can be wet and slippery.
Start: drive or taxi to Torca from Sorrento (25 min). Very limited parking. No public transport directly to Torca โ bus to Sant'Agata sui due Golfi then walk 20 min. Return same way.
Start descent at 7 AM in summer. Bring 3 liters of water, snorkeling gear, and food. There is nothing at the bottom. The climb back takes twice as long as you think.
