Marina Grande is the main beach of Amalfi town, stretching beneath the dramatic backdrop of the Cathedral of Sant'Andrea and the layered architecture of the former Maritime Republic. The sand is coarse and mixed with pebbles โ dark volcanic material that heats fast under the midday sun. Beach clubs dominate the prime waterfront, but a free section remains at the eastern end near the harbor. The bay faces south and catches full sun all day. Families, day-trippers, and ferry passengers crowd the shore from June through September. For all its crowds, the convenience is hard to beat: restaurants, gelato, ferries, and the historic center are all within a two-minute walk.
SITA bus terminal in Amalfi (2 min walk). Ferry dock at beach. Parking at Luna Rossa garage (underground, 5 EUR/h).
The free section is at the far east end near the harbor wall. For a quieter swim, rent a gozzo boat (small motorboat, no license needed) from the pier and anchor in any cove westward.
